Joe Kelly Joe and his wife Joy have been attending Hickory Creek Community Church since 2008. Both grew up on the south side of Chicago in Christian homes, and met in high school through Youth for Christ/Campus Life. Joe put his faith in Christ as the only way to have a right relationship with God at an early age with his mom after family devotions. Joy committed her life to Christ during high school after being challenged regarding if she only knew about Jesus or actually trusted in Him. They were married in Joy’s last year of Moody Bible Institute and Joe’s last year of Medical School. They have 2 married children and 3 grandchildren.

Joe spent his career as a surgeon in the Air Force and they have literally lived and served all over the nation and the world. Joy occasionally worked outside the home but mostly stayed home to raise their kids but was always volunteering to help in church and in several non-profit organizations. They made their home in Frankfort when Joe left government service with the idea that they wanted to be in the Chicago area to be near their aging parents. Joe is not currently actively practicing medicine but is teaching medically related classes at a local college.

Their unique history of living in more than a dozen different communities has allowed them to experience a variety of different churches and worship styles, and to serve in many different roles as needed in these different churches. While at Hickory Creek Joe has been involved teaching various Bible studies and discipling some men. He has been serving as an elder since 2011. Joy has been involved in Women’s Ministry, leading Bible studies and mentoring other women.

Joe’s life verse has been Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths.” He finds this fits well with the idea that we should love God, love others and God will direct us how we live that love out in our lives. After all Jesus tells us that as followers of Christ we should be known by our love (John 13:35).
